Questionaire:

Tell us about your family life.
I have been married since 1991 to my wife Mary and we have two children Daniel (14) and Liz (9). Yes, when elected in 2008, I will be the youngest President in history at the age of 42. As of December 2006, I am a registered Independent (former Republican.) My wife is a registered Democrat. We live together happily and reach middle ground on many issues. We agree to disagree on others.

Tell us about your political experience prior to running for president.
I have political experience, i.e. no experience in bribery, back stabbing, lying to the press, breaking the law, or corruption…; but I see these as pluses.

Tell us about your personal career prior to politics.
I work at a local technology company where I design software. Over the years, my career as a software engineer has trained me to be a problem solver.  I directly manage no one, but am in charge of directing or helping countless people to produce a large number of complex projects in great detail.  I am at various times the director, the arbiter, or the moderator.   I am the one that calls the meetings to hear the problems, the possible options to solve the issues, and drive the options to a solution.

Please discuss a public figure from the past 300 year who you admire most.
I admire Winston Churchill for his leadership during World War II.  He is famous for clever sayings, but he used those sayings and unflinching resolve to rally his people and the world to his nation's cause.   He was admittedly not a perfect man, but highly effective at what he did.

Do you think the US should have entered the war in Iraq?  Why or why not?  What is your strategy for finishing the war in Iraq.

No one without top secret clearance can answer that question with intelligence.  Assuming the facts we were presented at the time were accurate, yes, we should have attacked Iraq.   I do not believe we should still be there however.  The focus of the war has constantly shifted from enforcing UN resolutions, to removing the threat of weapons of mass destruction, to removing a dictator, to rebuilding, to building a democracy.

My strategy is to leave as soon as possible, but we must realize that no one who reads this site has the real facts. We hear the spin from the government and the media, but we don't know what's really happening over there. That said, we need to talk to the generals; speed up the timetable; but don't set an arbitrary date just to make people happy. Stop the "cut and run" or "surrender" talk. We fought and won our war and the troops can come home proudly. They have done everything that we have asked them to and more. If a civil war is indeed raging, we are enabling it by protecting the borders from foreign invasion. Take away that protection and the Iraqi people must step up and deal with threats to their nations instead of fighting amongst themselves. Finally we must realize that this is a redeployment at best. The war on terror will continue, but on other battlefronts, in times and places of our own choosing

While it is rarely mentioned in the news anymore, the US troops are still in Afghanistan.  What are your plans for that theater of operations?
Again we must talk to the generals on the ground and find out what objectives remain and what it will take to complete them.   Then we must leave the country.

The US initially went to war with Afghanistan under the presumption that Osama Bin Laden would be captured or killed.  Why do you think he has not been apprehended yet?  What do you plan to do about this?
We attacked Afghanistan because Al Qaeda was centered there, not necessarily Osama Bin Laden.  He hasn't been captured because he isn't there or someone is simply hiding him.  We have taken away enough of his infrastructure to reduce him to being mostly useless.   However if we withdraw from Afghanistan, he may become brave enough to stick his head out and make a mistake.  Then we will have our opportunity to act.

Iran has been spoken of by some as a potential threat to the United States.  Is Iran a threat to the United States?  What should be done about this?
Iran is a self-confessed threat and they must not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons.  We must talk to Iran to make clear our plans to destroy their capability to develop weapons should they continue on the path they are on.  We must talk to Iran's friends and make clear that they need to influence Iran or we will take action.   I am not talking about boots on the ground.  I am talking about a series of air strikes or special forces operations that will eliminate the weapons or the Iranian's capability to use them.

Are there any policies you would like to change or implement in the US Military and the Department of Defense?  Do you have any concerns about the oversight of these organizations?

Politicians have too much visibility and control over the military.  The military should be given objectives and then Washington must step out of the way.

I favor a comprehensive plan consisting of pieces of Eisenhower's Massive Retaliation (overwhelming force to strike back against any aggression), Kennedy's Flexible Response (having multiple military options during a crisis), and the Powell doctrine (a clear exit strategy being required.) The end result being that the United States will use military action wherever necessary, in whatever form necessary. I also favor taking the military "off the radar screen." This does not mean that they are allowed to do whatever they want. Rather it means that you won't be able to find out where forces are by a simple internet search. Restrictions on military protection for the press must also be increased, allowing all our forces to do their job without looking good for or protecting a camera.

Legislation and policy since 9/11 have attempted to increase Counter-Terrorism measures.  Many Americans feel this has come at the expense of civil liberties.  What if anything do you plan to change in this regard?
We have checks and balances for a reason.  The judicial branch should continue to strike down any law that have overreached.   I will focus on security and allow the other two branches to focus on their jobs as well.

Do you plan to make any changes regarding US immigration policy and border enforcement?
Yes, I plan to enforce existing laws, build the fence – whether physical or virtual (technology, manpower, weaponry) – and encourage new legislation to dry up any encouragement employers or the government give for illegal immigrants to break the law.

Some people have discussed the idea of introducing a national ID card.  How do you feel about this?
If it is necessary for security and the benefits outweigh the costs, then I am fine with it.

What are your plans and opinions on the Enforcement, Intelligence and Security organizations such as the Department of Homeland Security, Central Intelligence Agency, Federal Bureau of Investigation, National Security Agency, Secret Service, Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and the Drug Enforcement Agency?
I have no plans to dramatically change these organizations.  I have friends that work for some of these agencies and I would plan on cutting the red tape that keeps them from being more effective.

What is your stance on gun control?  What do you plan to change or implement regarding the specific policies on shotguns, rifles, handguns and assault weapons?

I am the owner of several hand guns. I have also purchased several other firearms over the course of my life. Kentucky law has changed many times over the years. I have purchased weapons with and without background checks as well as with and without a waiting period. The firearms I have purchased are for self & home defense and target shooting. I carry a Concealed Deadly Weapons License after completing the proper training.

I support sensible gun control. A person has the right to defend themselves and their family. But I have no problems with background checks or a waiting period to help make sure guns are owned by responsible people. I firmly believe these are not attacks on the second amendment, but are an effort to improve safety for our law enforcement officials and each other.

What is your stance on US drug policy?  Do you plan to make any changes on the enforcement of Drug Prohibition Policy?
Illegal drugs are just as illegal as illegal immigrants.  We are a nation of laws and I will enforce those laws.

Do you intend to legalize marijuana for medical use?

Marijuana may already be prescribed for medical use by a physician for compassionate use.  I see no need to change this.

Government entitlement programs such as Social Security, Medicare and Welfare are going farther from fiscal solvency.  What measures will you take on this?  Do you plan on making any changes in the coverage or scope of current entitlement programs?  Please outline any specific changes you will make.

We have to make sure the programs are not abused, but they must remain solvent.  We have to make Social Security work. People rely on it to survive and people have paid into it expecting a return when their time comes. The money needs to be invested like anyone's IRA, some of it in conservative funds and some in funds that have a higher return. I do not favor private accounts that individuals control, because the number of investment options is dizzying. I do favor some higher risk/return accounts that the financial experts control. I plan to appoint/hire the best of economists to find out how to get a better return on investment for current funds to meet the needs of the system for the long term.

There are a large number of factors which affect Social Security's long term stability. Among these are number of people paying in and their wage cap (currently at $90,000), number of people collecting, retirement age levels, cost of living allowances, and the interest rate that held funds earn. Today's computer models can show us when we will run out of money. I propose the same models can be used to change the variables we can - with policy change to follow - so that the system will remain solvent.

Many people, especially the elderly are worried about the cost of medicine and medical care.  What do you plan to do about this?
Keep the federal government out of the way as much as possible.  Allow the free market to work and market innovation to prosper, e.g. Wal-Mart's $4 prescriptions has no government input.  Keep foolish and punishing lawsuits away from the doctors and pharmaceutical companies to lower their overall costs.

What is your record on raising or lowering taxes?  Do you plan to raise or lower taxes as President?  Why?
I have never raised taxes.  Nor have I lowered them, since I have never held office.   I favor lower taxes to allow people to spend their own money and keep the economy strong.  I support the fairtax that is currently being discussed in Congress and can be explained at www.fairtax.org.

How do you plan on ensuring the fiscal solvency of the United States Government?  Please outline any specific plans you have for this end.

Immediately balance the budget; stop deficit spending; and stop adding to the debt.  Reduce federal spending.   Replace federal income tax with national sales tax to fully pay for valid federal spending and pay down the debt.

I am required to keep my checkbook in balance; because if my bills did not get paid, there would be trouble. There is no reason that the United States Government should not be held to the same standard. Smart spending and smart taxation are required.   I believe in smaller government, not bigger; one that is fiscally responsible. We will have to take a hard look at what government spending is critical and beneficial, and what is not. I believe in letting Americans keep as much money from their paychecks as possible to drive the economy.

The US Dollar is losing its value compared to other world currencies.  What do you plan to do about this?
By strengthening our own economy and paying down our debt, we will restore confidence in the dollar.

What are your long term plans to improve the United States Economy?
Those mentioned previously.  If we are fiscally solvent and get the government out of your paychecks, we will do well.

President Bush agreed to the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America in 2005.  Do you believe this is a good thing?  Do you plan on making any specific changes to the agreements in this partnership?
No, from my understanding, it will not benefit the United States.  I would not sign any treaty or trade agreement to bypass Congress and betray the American people.

Many people are worried about environmental concerns such as Global Warming, the Depletion of the Ozone Layer, and Pollution.  What do you intend to do about this?

I do not believe the crisis is as dramatic as the media or some extremists make it out to be.  However it cannot be ignored.  If there is anything man has done, it revolves around our use of energy.

I prefer to support electric use. Electricity can be generated by wind, geothermal, nuclear or emerging technologies. Build electric or electric hybrid cars and we will be well suited for the future.

Convert houses/business to electric heat/energy use as well to wean them off oil or natural gas. Reduction of our dependence on foreign oil has the positive side effects of lessening the power of troubled Middle Eastern countries and lowering greenhouse gas emission as well.

Do you plan to make any changes regarding US energy policy?  Please address transportation, and power distribution.
My energy plan would be complete independence from foreign sources - mostly oil – and then concentrate on electricity as previously stated.

Abortion is a heated debate among many Americans.  What are your personal feelings on Abortion?  Do you plan on making any changes in current abortion policy?  If so, how do you plan to accomplish your changes?
Though I know many well intentioned people will disagree with me, I believe that life begins at conception. Therefore abortion should not be used for birth control, gender selection, or anything short of a life threatening emergency. Partial birth abortion is particularly horrible and should be banned.

What is your stance on Gay Marriage? Do you plan to make any changes regarding policy in this area?

I support any legislation, involving a constitutional amendment or otherwise, that continues to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman. The reasons are legal, reduction of confusion, and financial. To many, there are moral questions at hand, but we must understand that the basis of one's morality is not shared by all Americans.

The discussion of the meaning of marriage must first be a legal one. There is beauty in marriage, but if we reduce marriage to its basics, it is not a right or entitlement, but a legal act. It is defined as, "the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a legal, consensual, and contractual relationship recognized and sanctioned by and dissolvable only by law." Redefining marriage to remove the "opposite sex" part would be a government decreed, morally based change which would effectively force all Americans to endorse a sexual behavior.

What are your opinions on the idea of “Net Neutrality”?  What do you plan to do about “Net Neutrality”?
I know of no problems caused by net neutrality or every packet of information being treated equally.   If it isn't broken, there is no need to fix it.

Do you have a set of standards by which you intend to appoint Federal Judges?  What standards must a potential Federal Judge or Supreme Court Justice meet to gain your approval?
I will look for the best qualified judge who will interpret the constitution and not rewrite it.

What are your plans for the US education system?  Is the “No Child Left Behind Act” a good thing?  Do you plan on making any changes to the “No Child Left Behind Act”.  How do you plan on changing US policy regarding elementary school, high school, and higher education?

I do not support the "No Child Left Behind Act".  Having two children in school and working with youth for years has shown me that the measurement of teachers and schools has become burdensome to the point of interfering with education. In some cases, children are taught to pass tests, not to learn. Teachers are instructed to improve test scores by doing "whatever it takes." We receive notes sent home during testing periods to encourage us to send snacks and make sure our kids get adequate rest during these testing times. The lack of emphasis on the rest of the school year is revealing.

Measurement must be a part of education, but we already have grades and graduation. These can be falsified, at the expense of our children, but some better way of measuring schools and their success must be put in place.

What issues are of strongest concern to you regarding domestic policy?  What changes will you make?
Our fiscal security and illegal immigration.  Changes have already been discussed.

What issues are of strongest concern to you regarding foreign policy?  What changes will you make?
Our current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Our looming problems with Iran.   We also need to be clear to all other nations that we will not be the policeman of the world, but when we speak or act, we must be taken seriously because our words will quickly be followed by action.

Please take this opportunity to address any miscellaneous concerns, plans or policies that were not discussed in this questionnaire.  Also use this opportunity to make any closing statements.

I love my country and I want to do the most for it with the time I have. My goal is to arrive in Washington without the baggage of a political career. I will not owe anyone for donating big money, for pulling strings to put me in power, or for past voting deals or political favors. Instead I will offer the best solutions to problems and not a party's political agenda. I will offer independent arbitration to a divided government and real change from the real world.

A government OF the people means you can best be represented and served by someone more like you, a hard working American citizen, not a career politician. I went to public school, had a part time job, paid for my first car and my own college (except for the first year - thanks mom & dad), and started working right after college. I have a wife, two kids, a dog, a cat, and a hermit crab. I have a mortgage and car payments like you. Making America great and healthy is my goal. Starting a career of politics is not.
